E-NEWS FEBRUARY 2026

Fellow LJNA members and Lake Joseph Neighbours,

Hope this find you well – wherever this e-news may find you.

It has been a cold snowy winter but for those who love playing in the snow, we’ve had fantastic conditions for being out in the forests and on the ice!  Several members have taken advantage of the conditions to visit their island places.

Our board has met several times since the summer.  Top on our list is providing input to Seguin’s waste management review for Council's consideration. Please see links below to read the studies and to respond to our short survey.  We would like to hear about your experiences and views. Deadline for our survey is March 8th.

The Board has also been working on some fresh ideas for this summer. Is there something you would like to see? Please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

A highlight of winters in Seguin is the annual Sled Dog Mail Run that took place this past weekend. The LJNA is proud to be a supporter of this 41-year community tradition.  Check out photos on their facebook page.

This mid-winter enews also brings news from our Township Councillor Terry Fellner and some links to some interesting articles from local organizations.

Happy reading!

Warm regards,

Nancy Cohen, Chair

Update from the LJNA Board

Seguin Official Plan Review – Update

We continue to monitor and provide feedback on the ongoing revisions to Seguin’s Official Plan.  Most recently the town scheduled an open house to give more background and receive further comments from the public.  Our understanding is Seguin’s next step is to respond to any further public comments and schedule a statutory Public Meeting. Information posted by Seguin can be viewed on letsconnectseguin.ca

In general, we are pleased with the approach to clarify and strengthen the policy. Earlier this year we submitted a letter with questions and comments. Many of these have been addressed in the latest draft.  Along with our planning consultant, we are putting together revised comments on the remaining issues and plan to submit them shortly. Please be in touch with if you would like more details or have any questions or comments.

Update on Seguin Township Waste Management Review

Changes to dump sites coming

Seguin has been actively exploring options for management of its waste sites.  In the last few years, costs have grown considerably due to waste tipping fees but also due to illegal dumping both from contractors and from users from outside the municipality. Seguin is one the last municipalities in Ontario to have uncontrolled or 24/7 accessible waste stations.  Seguin staff have done extensive evaluations of options, including surveys of the public, and costing of alternatives.  Staff presented a report to a Special Meeting of Council on January 15th.  Links to the staff report for this meeting and the video of the August public information session can be accessed HERE

Solutions under consideration include fencing and staffing sites, controlling access to set days and times by potentially using key cards or something similar, adding better compaction machinery, closing some sites including, perhaps, the airport site. Here’s a link to local reporting on the issue.

LJNA is preparing comments for Council's consideration. We are gathering input from members to help inform our view.  Please take a few minutes to tell us about your experiences.  Click HERE.  Thank you!

LJNA’s “Meet the Township” webinar

Thank you to Seguin staff and the members who joined our webinar on October 24th.  We were very pleased with the turn out (20 members) and the very informative presentations from Taylor Elgie, Director of Planning Forrest Pengra, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Preston Nielsen, Environment and Climate Programs Coordinator.

Topics included:

  • Seguin Planning - How the process works, and how to navigate it
  • Seguin Township's Water Quality Monitoring Program
  • Invasive Species Management In Seguin Township
  • Seguin’s 2025 Waste Management Review

They have generously provided their PowerPoint for us to share with members and offered to answer any further questions.

LJNA’s Instagram Account – Gaining traction!

Over the past few summers, I have had the opportunity to help grow the Lake Joe North Association’s Instagram page, starting out with no followers to now over 120. When I first began working on the account, the goal was simple: to create a space where members could stay connected, updated, and celebrate lake life while sharing what makes Lake Joe North so special.

To build engagement, I focused on posting consistently and sharing a mix of content that reflected what was going on throughout the community, whether it was pictures of the lake, updates on upcoming events, or missing items. By highlighting different families, cottages, and traditions, along with special summer moments that represent what makes Lake Joe so unique. By keeping the content visually appealing and posting regularly, the page began to attract more attention and engagement.

Throughout the summer, the account steadily gained followers and increased interactions on posts. More people began liking posts and following along to stay connected with what was happening around the lake. Even though the content was curated and created directly for the page, it highlighted the sense of pride and appreciation people feel for being part of the community.

Instagram demonstrated how consistent and thoughtful social media presence can strengthen awareness of the Association and keep members feeling connected even when they aren’t at the lake, showcasing Lake Joe’s natural beauty and the strong sense of community that defines it.

I’m proud of the growth the account experienced this summer and of the foundation that has been created for it to continue growing in the future, and I am excited to continue posting and engaging our community.

Seguin Township News

Update from Councillor Terry Fellner

Tamarack North Rec Centre Update: Construction is proceeding well and excitement is building in the community.  This photo is of the pool which currently being assembled. I believe all the pieces and parts have now been fabricated and have been delivered to the site. The pool is made of stainless steel and has been totally built in Canada. Since it’s the first one of its kind, the fabricator had a few issues, and the delivery is behind a month. As a result, the facility will not open until the beginning of July, a 4 week delay.  A “soft” opening is planned for the summer months with a goal of full-scale operations after Labour Day.

A contract has been finalized and signed with the Simcoe/Muskoka YMCA to operate the facility and provide programming. As a condition the YMCA signed over the title to their Parry Sound property. The property has been sold.  Proceeds will be put towards construction costs.

To date the fundraising committee, lead by our mayor Ann McDiarmid, has raised approximately $ 3.6 M with a goal of $ 5M.  A sneak peak “hard hat party“ at the facility is planned for the end of May.  Activities will include, Live auction, dinner, music. More details to follow. Please plan to attend if you can.

Many families in our ward really stepped up to the plate and contributed generously to this very much needed community asset. Many thanks for this.  It is very much appreciated and it has made a real difference.

Community Turkey Dinner: The third annual free turkey dinner was held Dec 6, 2025 at the Orville Community Centre.  It was the largest one ever!  Both sittings were completely sold out, including delivery and take-home orders for folks unable to get to the centre. All in all we cooked 480 meals, served 450, the balance were delivered to a senior’s residence in Parry Sound.

The support from the community, staff and council was outstanding.  Volunteers from all parts of the township including folks who drove up from the city, just to help at the event.  The event is 100% funded by private donations. To all who donated, a sincere thank you!  Plans are already underway for the fourth annual – scheduled for early this December.

Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at terryfellner@seguin.ca or give me a call 519 831 5526.

Best regards,

Terry

Invasive Species Monitoring in Seguin Township

In December, Council received a report  from the group that is working on phragmites on mapping and planning control measures for Phragmites (a very invasive wetland plant).  We were surprised to see the extent of invasion including 4 or 5 locations quite close or on our lake - see the map p 10 of the report.
